Happy Friday fellow adventurers! In the outdoor news, it seems the curse of the Schapenberg Valley has finally lifted. Back in 2015, I titled one particular adventure a “Cursed Valley of Splendor”. A place so beautiful but riddled with not only riders bad luck but the short-sighted attitude of a local guest house to close the trail as they saw it as a hindrance more than a profit. Over the months the trail was left overgrown and shoddy. Not scared, I braved scratches and grazes, and rode the shady paths under the shadow of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and timber forests below. It reminded me of the times of youth when I took my BMX down self-made trails through banana plantations. Dodging trees, catching legs on twigs and wiping out. It’s is a rush of endorphins, a release of negative energy.
For months now I have wondered when my rugged escapades through the Schapenberg Valley would be brought to a halt. I don’t think I was really allowed to be riding free through these trails. However the peace it brought outweighed the conflict. I imagined a farmer stopping me dead in my tracks or being chased by massive dogs. Gratefully, the situation changed for the better and have once again Inspired Adventure.
Introducing True Grit Bike Park to save the day! Ivan Ruthven-Bruijns and his family have now opened a coffee shop, Mtb park and kiddies entertainment area that is a wonderful dream and has a very promising future. Based on Knorhoek Estate off Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road there are a variety of new trails that have been wonderfully sculptured for a pumping ride.
A rustic, farm and friendly atmosphere you can even take a hot shower after a long day and good sweat. Whether a rider, runner or hiker there is potential to live an adventure among fields of folly and fantasy forests. True Grit Bike Park boasts “Trails, Mountain Biking, Trail Running, Events, Kids Parties, Year End Functions, Coffee and Family! What more could you ask for!”
As for the trails, there is a kiddies 1km and then 5, 12 and 17km trails for adults. I am really happy that this country escape is back in action as for the thrill and smiles that come with it. Wild Things Outdoor is excited to bring adventures through this splendid valley.
