Last week I was privileged to experience a day with one of Wild Things Outdoor’s new adventure operators, Cape Canopy Tour.
Unzip Adventure
The Cape Canopy Tour zip line is situated in the Hottentots Holland nature reserve, just an hour’s drive from Cape Town.
It consists of thirteen cliff side platforms and eleven zip line cables that connect you to a journey above a world heritage site that boasts a diverse fauna and flora.
This activity is great for the whole family and will allow you to reconnect with nature. Do not expect a cell phone signal in the mountains. The only tweets you will hear are the birds, soaring with you above the breath-taking gorges.
The welcoming hut is tech savvy with a touch of an old school fireplace and coffee to warm up on those chilly mornings. It is suggested that the morning is the best time to enjoy this ride of a lifetime.
Book in advance, arrive a bit early, sign in, enjoy a coffee, take a safety briefing, gear up and unzip adventure.
Rocking and Rolling
The 4×4 ride to the start of the trail is a proper African back massage, as you bounce over the uneven jeep tracks to the peaks that await your joyous screams.
The guides are professional and safety is always first. From weatherproof clothing to harnesses, helmets, and connections, you are covered better than an insurance plan.
The humor of our guides mixed in perfectly with their professionalism. Those who were unsure or scared were eased into the experience and left with a smile at the end.
Down the Rabbit Hole
“Just as Alice went spiraling down the Rabbit Hole into a land of wonder, so we invite you to join us on a magical journal through these beautiful mountains. Welcome to Wonderland”. This was written on the first platform and as I looked up at the misty peaks and green gorges, I imagined floating away to another world.
This was just what happened. On cables 90 to 300 meters in length, you will zip and zig zag deeper and deeper into this magical floral kingdom.
Each platform carefully engineered into the rock face boasts a unique view of this incredibly diverse habitat and beautiful vistas. At one point you walk across a suspension bridge with a waterfall below.
Trust your guide and slide down a path of adrenalin with a twist of magic.
A River with No End
At the source of the Riviersonderend, you imagine what it is like in those crystal waters below. Further down the river is the well-known Suicide Gorge canyon. Don’t be fooled by the name. It is more heaven than hell.
The tour ends just before that and it is a peaceful one-kilometer hike back to the pickup point. The 4x4s will collect you and take you back to base for a complimentary lunch and chance to watch yourself in action on the peaks above.
